Greeting from the President
Prof. Hiroaki Kato
Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kyoto University
Physical pharmaceutical sciences are an academic area that not only serves pharmaceutical sciences but also constitutes the basis of the science more generally and is composed of a wide variety of academic fields including physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, radiochemistry, galenical pharmacy, coordination chemistry, molecular structure science, structural biology, molecular and biological imaging, drug delivery, and information science. Physical pharmaceutical sciences also contribute to the identification, early diagnosis, and treatment processes of diseases. Moreover, in the field of innovative drug development, it plays an important role in such areas as the drug target research, structural determination, drug design, drug structures and physical properties research, drug product formulation, and administration planning, as well as production and quality management. In addition, the research products of physical pharmaceutical sciences are also essential in drug evolution. The importance of physical pharmaceutical sciences is growing further in the six-year pharmacy education system, which has been introduced to enrich clinical pharmacy education.
The Division of Physical Sciences of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan holds every year the “Symposium on Biomedical-Analytical Sciences”, the “Symposium on Role of Metals in Biological Reactions, Biology and Medicine”, the “Symposium on Interactions between Biomembranes and Drugs”, and the “Physical Pharma Forum for Young Scientists” for the purpose of developing physical pharmaceutical sciences research and training young researchers. Moreover, the “Symposium on the Perspective of Education and Research in Physical Pharmaceutical Sciences” was dissolved and we launched a symposium organize by the division in the annual meeting to discuss the education and science in thus fields. In addition, since the academic year 2015, the “Award for Young Scientists by the Division of Physical Sciences” has been established in order to encourage young prospective researchers in the division, who ambitiously pursue research.
Through these our activities, we hope to contribute to a health care, medical care and drug discovery in order to further development of physical pharmaceutical sciences. We kindly ask for your further support and collaboration.
